- The 2021 Summer Olympic Games are scheduled to begin on July 23.
- Many residents in Japan are now calling for this global sporting event to be officially canceled.
- Analysts are now questioning whether or not having fans at the Japan Olympics is possible.
Since mid-2020, members of Japan’s government and the IOC have been trying to come up with ways to safely hold the Olympic Games this summer. Much of the discussion has centered around whether or not fans will be allowed to attend this event. New reports claim that a decision on whether or not to allow fans at the Japan Olympics will be coming soon.
No one really knows what to expect here. The world is changing every single day and it’s anyone’s guess how things will look by the time July rolls around. Now is a great time to discuss some of the ways things could play out here.
Let’s get into it!
More Are Pushing to Cancel the 2021 Olympic Games
The Summer Olympic Games initially scheduled to take place in 2020 has been one of the most difficult to host in history. Early last year, analysts began predicting that this event would need to be postponed. Members of the IOC were doing their best to avoid this.
It eventually became clear that there was no other option. The IOC and officials within Japan’s government confirmed that the event was being pushed back by a year. At that time, this seemed like a perfectly reasonable solution and most felt the world would be closer to normal by the time summer of 2021 rolls around.
Many are now less optimistic that this event will be able to take place. In some areas of the world, infection rates are beginning to drop. In other parts, cases are rising and experts are keeping their eyes on several different variants of concern.
As time goes on, more individuals in Japan are calling for the cancelation of this event. Many feel it is no longer worth the money or time. Public polls are showing that the vast majority of business owners in the country no longer support holding the Olympic Games.
The IOC and Japan’s government is doing everything they can to avoid canceling this event. A huge amount of time and energy has been invested into it already. Hope is that the world is in a better position by July than it currently finds itself in.
There are still many questions that surround this entire event. One of the most pressing questions is whether or not Japan will allow international fans to attend the Games. Here’s what we know about this situation.
IOC Will Decide About Allowing Fans at the Japan Olympics Soon
The International Olympic Committee has been under intense pressure over the past year. This group continues to face backlash over its push to hold the Olympic Games this summer. Despite the criticism, the IOC believes that the event should take place.
Some of Japan’s top leaders agree. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is still supporting the plans for the Olympic Games. Tokyo’s Governor also feels that holding this event will show a “sign of global unity.”
Under normal circumstances, the Summer Olympics draw in millions of people from around the world. It’s a truly global event that can help to bring many people from different nations together. Obviously, there are some issues with Japan bringing in so many tourists right now.
It now appears that Japan will make a decision on whether or not to allow fans at the Japan Olympics soon. Mainichi, a popular Japanese newspaper, claims Japan has already decided to ban any fans. Olympic organizing committee president Seiko Hashimoto shed some light on this decision to the media this week.
“If the situation is tough and it would make the [Japanese] consumers concerned, that is a situation we need to avoid from happening,’” Seiko said. “We need to look at the overall situation before we decide on any percentage rates. We believe we will not be accepted unless the citizens feel confident that sufficient countermeasures are taken.”
Based on the way things currently are, it seems extremely unlikely that we’ll see any fans at the Olympic Games. Vaccine distribution is ramping up, though, and some believe there could be some massive improvements by the time July rolls around. Stay tuned for updates!
