Kempton betting tips
13:15 – Juvenile Hurdle
A tough opening contest to the Kempton betting tips with just two having the benefit of experience over hurdles and neither of those worth a second look. Nicky Henderson’s Overpriced Mixer is likely to be well supported, he was the pick of these on the British flat types after a decent 2-year-old season and is the most interesting convert. Paul Nicholls saddles another French import, Viroflay, who is the choice of the remainder.
Selections: Overpriced Mixer, Viroflay
13:45 – Novices’ Handicap Chase
Top rated Demon D’Aunou has failed to progress after winning a similar event at Catterick, unfortunate in unseating the rider when badly hampered next time at Southwell before disappointing over hurdles at Stratford and back over fences at Perth. A 7lb claimer takes the ride now in an effort to get him back on track but he’s unappealing off a mark of 119.
Rock On Rocco is interesting on his first spin over fences, he’ll need to take to them on his first outing against more experienced rivals but was in good form in novice hurdles at the end of last season and looks made for the bigger obstacles. Lord Condi showed a good turn of foot between fences in landing a novices handicap at Southwell, he is only 3lbs higher than that win and should appreciate conditions. Admiral’s Sunset is also on a fair mark with the benefit of a summer campaign behind him.
Selections: Rock on Rocco, Lord Condi, Admiral’s Sunset
14:22 – Novices’ Hurdle
Fidelio Vallis’ novice form puts him right in the mix, having fallen on heavy ground at Chepstow he went on to score with ease at Wincanton despite racing freely. When winning a useful contest at Kempton his jumping had improved notably, racing freely in the early stages but apparently overcoming that on both occasions when sent on to lead. Noise from connections indicated he would be going novice chasing this campaign but he sets a useful standard while kept over the smaller obstacles.
For Pleasure is on a similarly upwards trajectory, now rated 35lbs higher than the 109 he was given when lining up in a Market Rasen novice event on 10th July. This could be an interesting race from a pace perspective given that each have built their success on front running tactics. The natural question then is whether these runners challenge one another for the lead, and in doing so leave the door open to another ridden more patiently, but there is little else of significant interest for me in truth.
Selections: Fidelio Vallis, For Pleasure
14:57 – 2m2f Handicap Chase
This should reveal plenty more about Darling Maltaix than his last run when faced with just two rivals as a 2/5 shot at Ludlow, there’s no rise for that run and connections have turned him out quickly but he looks vulnerable dropping back in trip. Richard Johnson always looked confident on Leapaway at Hexham and he had plenty left at the line suggesting the trip here won’t be an issue, he’s up 7lb so he’ll need to improve but if putting in a similar round of jumping he should be competitive on ground he’ll enjoy.
Solar Impulse has also had a consistent start to the season and should be competitive off a mark of 126. At a big price I like the look of Generous Day as an EW bet and one the market may have underestimated. He was highly tried in strong handicaps last season where he appeared to be well found out, his record at this level though is very good and he scored at this track in 2019 off 2lb lower in a comfortable victory so he can go well after wind surgery if fit.
Selections: Leapaway, Solar Impulse
15:32 – Racing TV Hurdle
An early season clash of some top hurdlers is the pick of the races on Sunday. Silver Streaks returns to defend his crown having struck in a small field in 2019, he held high company last season with two placed efforts in Grade 1s over 2m and a 6th placed finish in the Champion Hurdle and connections will have no concerns about his ability when fresh. Nicky Henderson has two entries with established hurdlers Verdana Blue and Brain Power. Brain Power disappointed last season, pulled up twice; in a messy Champion Hurdle and then in the Scottish equivalent, a race in which stablemate Verdana Blue won giving weight to all except the aforementioned runner.
She should be fitter than most of these having had two spins over the summer in competitive flat handicaps, a second in the Ascot Stakes and a no-less impressive third in the Ebor. She gets a valuable 7lb mares allowance and is probably the one to beat here. Diego Du Charmil was second here in the Kingwell Hurdle and posted some strong form in handicap and listed company towards the beginning of last season, he will need to improve 10lbs to beat some very smart hurdlers who will be Champion Hurdle bound but that’s not something you would bet against given the manner in which his trainer has started the season.
Selections: Silver Streak, Verdana Blue
14:07 – 3m Handicap Chase
Mortems Leam was fortunate to get away with idling when well clear at Wetherby, he’s up 5lbs for that narrow victory and steps up to 3m, a trip over which he has a very poor record so he’s easily opposable back on good ground. Mr Mafia is now 2lb lower than his last winning mark, that score coming over 3m2f at Newton Abbott, the 11 year old has shown enough over the summer to suggests he retains that ability and will relish the good ground on which his last eight wins have come.
Pontresina may well defy a 4lb rise having had the race taken away from him in the Stewards room after being first past the post at Fontwell and is included to round off the Kempton betting tips.
Selections: Mr Mafia, Pontresina
