To raise awareness for domestic violence, the Scarlet Pearl wore purple shirts in remembrance of Augusta ‘Gussie’ Brooks, a former employee at the Scarlet Pearl Casino and Resort who lost her life to domestic violence.
On February 23rd, the Scarlet Pearl held a training on domestic violence and the following week, Brooks tragically lost her life.
The domestic violence awareness color is purple and it is a symbol of peace, courage, survival, honor, and dedication to ending violence.
Hotel Operations Assistant Director Darvis Gill and Hotel Housekeeping Supervisor Marcie Moberly tell News 25 wearing these shirts is not only a way to bring awareness to the employees at Scarlet Pearl, but also the community. Gill said, “This is something for the associates to show they’re just honoring her and reaching out to others and make them aware of domestic violence situations.”
Moberly said, “For anyone going through an issue with domestic violence, there is help out there. Please seek help. There is someone out there that can help you get out of your situation.”
The Scarlet Pearl associates have named February 23rd ‘Gussie’s Day’ to remember her.
