- Schalke claimed their only league win of the season in their last home fixture.
- The hosts are unbeaten in their last three home meetings with Cologne.
- Cologne have failed to win or score in any of their last five Bundesliga games.
Schalke to build on overdue success
Schalke ended a 30-match winless run in the Bundesliga that stretched nearly a full calendar year when thrashing Hoffenheim 4-0 in their last home fixture.
That means new boss Christian Gross boasts a 100% record in home matches since taking charge, while five of Schalke’s seven points so far this season have come on their own patch.
The Royal Blues also boast a strong recent home record against Cologne, as they are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Wednesday’s visitors at the Veltins Arena.
Cologne certainly have their own problems heading into the fixture, as their record of two points from their last five league games is the worst in the Bundesliga.
Markus Gisdol’s side have not even scored a goal during that period, while their last away fixture ended in a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Freiburg, which is why we are predicting a rare win for Schalke.
However, given the host’s own well-documented problems, well feel it may be a tight and cagey contest, with our prediction of the result being a 1-0 success for Schalke.
