Conor McGregor (22-4-0)
McGregor returns from retirement and still ranks as the fourth best fighter in the lightweight division. His most recent victory was a first round TKO against Donald Cerrone almost exactly a year ago.
His fighting resume shows that he has 19 wins by knockout, one by submission, and two by decision. Out of his 19 knockouts, he has 14 of them resulting in first round finishes.
“Notorious” has a striking accuracy at 49 percent and a grappling accuracy at 62 percent. He lands 5.43 significant strikes a minute while absorbing 4.40. This ratio is solid and has a high volume on both sides, so it would be great if he could defend better.
McGregor has a takedown defense at 70 percent and a significant strike defense at 55 percent. He also averages 0.75 takedowns per 15 minutes of fight time.
Dustin Poirier (26-6-0)
Poirier enters this rematch currently ranking the second best fighter in the lightweight division. He arguably went through the toughest stretch of what the lightweight division has to offer in his last six fights, only losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov in the title fight.
His fighting resume shows that he has 12 wins by knockout, seven by submission, and seven by decision. He also has 12 wins that have been first round finishes with a combined effort of knockouts and submissions.
“The Diamond” has a striking accuracy at 50 percent and a grappling accuracy at 35 percent. He lands 5.57 significant strikes a minute and absorbs 4.18. This ratio is similar to McGregors, so that same principle from above applies here.
Poirier has a takedown defense at 60 percent and a significant strike defense at 54 percent. He also averages 1.46 takedowns and 1.30 submissions every 15 minutes.

Both fighters have put together impressive resumes and have taken care of some of the lightweight division’s best fighters. This will be an excellent test for both, as they continue to stay atop the rankings.
Poirier is a gifted, all around fighter that has very solid striking ability in addition to his ground game. You could not ask for a more well rounded fighter and one that has had an impressive stretch in the lightweight division the last few years.
Overall, McGregor is a gamble here and does appear to have a solid chance at defeating Poirier. He will need to stay persistent and take the fight to Poirier.
